چکیده

by Alan Scott Boydstun, Ph.D. Washington State University May 2009 Chair: Robert Patterson A debate exists regarding the relative processing level of cyclopean-defined motion in the visual system. Some authors have attributed the processing of cyclopean-defined motion to stages in the visual system that enact similar algorithms of motion computation to luminance-defined motion; whereas, other authors attribute the processing of cyclopeandefined motion to cognitive processes that track stimuli features. Thus, the purpose of this study was to provide evidence that bears upon the debate regarding the relative processing stage of cyclopean motion. To explore this debate we utilized an action capture paradigm. Action capture refers to the possible influence of bodily movements on visual perception. In this study, we used bi-directional hand movements as a possible bias for the perception of motion direction in an ambiguous apparent motion display. Thus, observers (N = 60) executed (Experiments 1 and 2) or planned (Experiment 3) directional (i.e. horizontal, vertical, or none) hand movements while viewing either luminanceor cyclopean-defined apparent motion. It was predicted that if cyclopean motion is processed at a relatively higher stage

Cross-matching: a modified cross-correlation underlying threshold energy model and match-based depth perception

Three-dimensional visual perception requires correct matching of images projected to the left and right eyes. The matching process is faced with an ambiguity: part of one eye's image can be matched to multiple parts of the other eye's image. This stereo correspondence problem is complicated for random-dot stereograms (RDSs), because dots with an identical appearance produce numerous potential m...

Transfer from action to perception: The effect of motor-perceptual enrichment

This study investigated the effect of audiovisual integration on action-perception transfer.40 subjects were randomly divided four groups: visual, visual-auditory, control visual and control visual-auditory. Visual groups watched pattern skilled basketball player and other groups in addition to watching pattern skilled basketball player, heard Elbow angular velocity as sonification. In first st...

In two studies, the authors examined whether apparent motion of a face (either toward or away from an observer) influences the recognition of facial displays of anger and fear. Based on theories regarding the signal value of specific threat displays (i.e., shared signal hypothesis), the authors predicted that anger (an approach-oriented threat display) would be more readily recognized in faces ...

Neurons in Striate Cortex Signal Disparity in Half-Matched Random-Dot Stereograms.

UNLABELLED Human stereopsis can operate in dense "cyclopean" images containing no monocular objects. This is believed to depend on the computation of binocular correlation by neurons in primary visual cortex (V1). The observation that humans perceive depth in half-matched random-dot stereograms, although these stimuli have no net correlation, has led to the proposition that human depth percepti...

Action intentions modulate visual processing during action perception.

The current debate on mechanisms of action understanding and recognition has re-opened the question of how perceptual and motor systems are linked. It has been proposed that the human motor system has a role in action perception; however, there is still no direct evidence that actions can modulate early neural processes associated with perception of meaningful actions. Here we show that plans f...
